Teachers play an essential role in shaping the communication experiences, confidence, and emotional well-being of students who stutter. At the Coleman Stuttering Center, we work with educators to help create supportive classroom environments where students feel safe communicating, participating, and expressing themselves. Many students who stutter worry about being called on in class, reading aloud, answering questions, or speaking in front of peers. Without appropriate understanding and support, these experiences can contribute to anxiety, avoidance, reduced participation, and decreased academic confidence. Our goal is to help teachers better understand stuttering and provide practical strategies that support communication success while fostering inclusion, respect, and self-confidence.
We provide guidance to teachers on how to respond to stuttering in supportive and effective ways while maintaining high expectations for student participation and engagement. This includes strategies for classroom communication, reducing unnecessary speaking pressure, supporting self-advocacy, and promoting positive peer interactions. We also collaborate with educators, school teams, and families to ensure students receive consistent support across environments. At the Coleman Stuttering Center, we believe that informed, supportive teachers can have a profound impact on a student’s communication confidence, educational experience, and long-term success both inside and outside the classroom.
