Coleman Stuttering Center
School-Age Children and Teens

At the Coleman Stuttering Center, we recognize that school-age children and teens who stutter often face challenges that go far beyond speech alone. As academic, social, and extracurricular demands increase, many young people begin to experience frustration, anxiety, embarrassment, or avoidance related to communication. Speaking in class, participating in group discussions, reading aloud, meeting new people, or simply ordering food at a restaurant can become stressful experiences. Our goal is to help children and adolescents build not only stronger communication skills, but also confidence, resilience, self-advocacy, and a healthy relationship with their voice and identity.
Treatment at the Coleman Stuttering Center is individualized, evidence-based, and focused on the whole person. We work collaboratively with students and families to address both the physical aspects of stuttering and the emotional and social experiences that often accompany it. Therapy may include strategies to improve communication effectiveness, reduce tension and avoidance, increase participation in meaningful activities, and develop confidence across school, sports, social situations, and future career goals. We also help students better understand stuttering, advocate for themselves in academic settings, and build skills that support long-term success. Our mission is not simply to reduce moments of stuttering, but to help children and teens communicate with greater confidence, authenticity, and freedom in all areas of life.
